This, in turn, will mean that the fence has a constant low DC voltage on it. This means that the case will have to be connected to the DC power supply. Switching the ground lead won't allow this. Since the coil is designed to "fire" when the current is interrupted, there really needs to be a current path for the secondary at that time. One terminal of the primary and one terminal of the secondary ARE connected together and both are connected to the metal case of the coil. It is important to note something that I just remembered about automotive ignition coils. Plus, you can always find an old ignition coil somewhere. Yet, in many of the same places, "electronic shops" DO have 3055s. That said, the OP could well be in an area where these are not readily available and the costs of shipping and import duty make them very expensive. I also really recommend using a prebuilt "fence charger" as they are called in the U.S. OK, the spark coil ought to work at that rate. In an engine, 1800 RPM is not terribly fast. ![]() I suspect that, running at the speed you propose, the pulse voltage will not be very high, because the current has not built up long enough. I am a bit surprised at using both a diode and the RC snubber. However, in the end, for this kind of application, I don't think that it makes much difference. That would correspond to having the snubber across the drive transistor. The capacitor is normally across the contacts in an engine use. You just cannot get the dI/dT when the current starts (due to coil inductance). On an ignition coil, in normal engine use, current builds up while the breaker points are closed and the spark is generated when the points open. Even when you have a chain-link fence, the electrical is almost always on a separate wire, spaced on the animal side maybe 10cm. You will find that if there is very much fence (metal surface area), the capacitance will be so high that you won't get much output amplitude. goats, and such) run a much slower pulse rate than that.
